The best Vanguard in Marvel Rivals for Season 10 is the role that decides most ranked lobbies above Gold. A single solid tank sets the pace of every fight, locks the enemy out of their comfort distance, and buys the Strategists on your team the window they need to pop ultimates. This tier list ranks every Vanguard in the current patch, with the matchups they win, the ones they lose, and the one tank that climbs the ladder fastest in solo queue.
How we rank the best Vanguard in Marvel Rivals
We measure three things: effective health per fight (health pool plus mitigation uptime), map coverage (how many sightlines a tank can lock on contested points), and ultimate value in a 6v6 fight. We then penalize Vanguards whose kit only works next to a specific duo — a tank that needs a specific Strategist or Duelist on the team is weaker in solo queue than one who stabilizes any composition. Season 10's Godbomb map, the Scarlet Witch rework and Gorr the God Butcher's arrival all pulled the meta further toward brawl range, and the tiers below reflect that shift.
S-tier Vanguards: the best tanks to lock in Season 10
Groot — the Season 10 anchor
Groot is the single best Vanguard in Marvel Rivals right now. His Ironwood Wall denies pathing on every contested point in the Season 10 rotation, including the two tight corridors on Godbomb that otherwise shred any tank without cover. He pairs with Rocket Raccoon (team-up: Flora Colossus) for a free armor pack, and his ultimate blocks a full choke for enough seconds to force the enemy support to burn their counter. Pick Groot when you are the solo tank and the enemy team runs any dive duelist — Spider-Man, Iron Fist, Black Panther. He punishes all three.
Doctor Strange — the shield that scales with team-ups
Doctor Strange's barrier soaks the burst of a Hela or Hawkeye volley long enough for your team to disengage, and the Scarlet Witch team-up (Gamma Maelstrom) now stacks the duelist rework on top of his portal, which is the strongest Vanguard–Duelist combo in the patch. If your lobby talks about team-ups and runs Scarlet Witch or Wanda-adjacent compositions, Strange is a strict upgrade over any other shield tank. He drops a tier if you queue solo and the Strategist locks a weaker partner — his ceiling is high, his floor is average.
Captain America — the dive answer
Captain America's shield throw plus Living Legend charge is the cleanest answer in the game to a Spider-Man or Iron Fist dive. His mobility also lets him flex onto the second point of a push and reset uptime on his shield, which Groot cannot do. He loses the matchup against a bunker-style enemy that stacks Hela and a Strategist with a long-range heal, but above Platinum most lobbies run dive, and Captain America punishes it. Lock him when the enemy team instalocks a flying duelist.
A-tier Vanguards: lockable, with conditions
Magneto
Magneto's Metallic Fury barrier and the Scarlet Witch team-up (Gamma Maelstrom's secondary line) make him a credible Doctor Strange alternative, especially on maps with long sightlines. His ultimate turns teamfight ultimates like Jeff's or Luna Snow's into free value. He drops from S-tier because his pick rate above Diamond is high enough that the enemy duelist will prep a counter, and because his primary fire does not punish close-range dive the way Captain America's shield throw does.
Thor
Thor's Awakening Rune gives him burst survivability no other Vanguard in the game can match. His hammer throw also stops the current meta duelists mid-dash, which is why he has climbed back from the pre-season 10 patch. He is slightly behind the S-tier because his damage falls off against bunker compositions and his ultimate (God of Thunder) requires the team to brawl in a specific radius — a hard ask in solo queue.
Emma Frost
Emma Frost's Diamond Form is one of the cleanest tank-up buttons in the roster, and the Psychic Lance gives her the only crowd-control cone a Vanguard owns. She works well as a secondary tank on brawl maps, and the Hellfire Gala team-up with Magneto makes her even stronger when the lobby already runs a shield. She drops to A-tier because her uptime depends on cooldown management — a mistake with Diamond Form costs you a full teamfight.
B-tier Vanguards: situational
Hulk
Hulk is the raw-health king — his Hulk Form sits well above every other Vanguard's effective HP, and the Iron Man team-up (Gamma Boost) lets your duelist burst a backline tank in two shots. He drops to B-tier because his hero form is paper-thin outside Hulk Form, and because his ultimate (World Breaker) is read on sight by any competent Strategist. Pick him on brawl maps when your duelist already runs Iron Man.
Venom
Venom's Symbiotic Shield and his wall-climb make him the only dive-style Vanguard in the game, and he still wins the pure 1v1 against most duelists. He drops to B because solo-dive tanking rarely holds a point above Platinum — a Venom who leaves the Strategist alone usually loses the point before the duelist dies. The Spider-Man team-up (Cytoplasmic Infusion) is strong, but the whole package only clicks when the duelist on your team actually dives with him.
The Thing
The Thing is a melee brawler with armor regen that rewards short-range fights. He punishes any Strategist caught alone and his ultimate is one of the few Vanguard ults that converts into a secured kill rather than only a disengage. He drops to B because he loses badly to ranged bunker setups and because his mobility outside Yancy Street Charge is limited.
C-tier Vanguards: playable but map-locked
Peni Parker
Peni Parker is still a credible defender-side pick on Yggsgard: Royal Palace and Spider-Islands, where her nest and mines own the second point. On any other map she sits a tier below the rest of the roster — the Scarlet Witch rework and Gorr's arrival both erase her nest in a single teamfight, and her mobility is the lowest among all Vanguards.
Which Vanguard climbs ranked the fastest in Season 10
If you want the shortest path from Gold to Platinum this season, lock Groot. He covers for Strategist mistakes, he does not require a specific team-up to work, and his skill floor is the lowest in the Vanguard roster. If you are already in Diamond or above, Doctor Strange returns more value per fight — but only when your lobby plays around his team-ups. For the full climb framework, see our Marvel Rivals rank boost guide, which covers every tier gate from Bronze to One Above All.
- Solo-queue, Bronze to Platinum: Groot.
- Diamond and above, team-up lobbies: Doctor Strange.
- Enemy team runs flying dive: Captain America.
- Lobby already has a shield tank: Emma Frost or Thor.
- Brawl maps with an Iron Man duelist: Hulk.
How the Season 10 patches moved the Vanguard meta
The September 11 Season 10 patch brought the Godbomb map rotation, the Scarlet Witch rework and Gorr the God Butcher — all three pushed the game further toward brawl range, which rewarded Groot, Doctor Strange and Captain America at the expense of long-range sitters. The September 24 balance pass tuned Scarlet Witch's secondary and the Jeff Dream Eater event, but did not move the Vanguard tier order. The October 1 patch (Lunar Luna and Cosmic Spark skins) was cosmetic and did not shift balance. The current tier list holds through at least the next patch window.
Best Vanguard pairings for the Season 10 team-up meta
Team-ups now carry fights more than they did in Season 9. Groot pairs with Rocket Raccoon (Flora Colossus) for a free armor pack and with Jeff the Land Shark for passive healing. Doctor Strange's Gamma Maelstrom with Scarlet Witch is the strongest Vanguard–Duelist line in the patch. Magneto with Emma Frost (Hellfire Gala) prints two shield layers in the same radius. Hulk with Iron Man (Gamma Boost) one-shots a 250-HP duelist from range. Pick your Vanguard around which team-ups your lobby can actually run — a Groot without a Rocket is still S-tier; a Doctor Strange without a Scarlet Witch is only A-tier.
